Student Groups

Engage with the GSWS community beyond the classroom.

Our department hosts a number of student organizations, and all VCU students are welcome to join. We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to build connection and community with your peers.

Student Advisory Board

Students are the true heart of GSWS. The GSWS Student Advisory Board is composed of dedicated student volunteers who offer insight, guidance and leadership to help strengthen and grow the department. They bring an invaluable voice to the table, advocating for student needs and contributing to programming that builds community. The GSWS Student Advisory Board typically meets once a month during the spring and fall semesters. If you are interested in joining, please email gsws@vcu.edu.

Jail Mail

Jail Mail is an open opportunity for students from all departments to come together to write letters, make zines and prepare care packages for prisoners in the Richmond City Jail and LGBTQ prisoners in the U.S. Jail Mail gathers weekly during the spring and fall semesters in Crenshaw House (919 W. Franklin St.), Gabriel's House (816 W. Franklin St.) and also virtually. All are welcome to join; please feel free to email Liz Canfield at ercanfield@vcu.edu with any questions.

Art Mafia

Art Mafia is a student group that imagines and organizes the GSWS spring and fall art shows, hosted in Crenshaw House and in other spaces. This group is composed of students in GSWS and other departments across VCU. You do not have to be an artist to join! Art Mafia typically meets a few times each during the spring and fall semesters. For more information on getting involved, please email Liz Canfield at ercanfield@vcu.edu.
